St. Michael the Archangel Chaplet

About the Chaplet

God created animals, beings with a body but no soul. Then he created humans, beings with a body and a soul. But before either of these, God created celestial beings that have a soul but no body.

The Bible tells us the names of nine groupings of these celestial beings: Seraphim, Cherubim, Thrones, Dominations, Powers, Virtues, Principalities, Archangels and Angels (Isaiah 6:2; Genesis 3:24; Colossians 1:16; Ephesians 1:21; and Romans 8:38). While technically only one of these groups are called Angels, we refer to all celestial beings as angels and the nine groupings as the Choirs of Angels.

In the 1750s, a Carmelite nun, Antonia d’Astonac, received a private revelation from St. Michael the Archangel. He instructed her on how to pray and ask the Choirs of Angels to intercede for us to God. This grouping of prayers, known as the Chaplet of St. Michael the Archangel, was approved by Pope Pius the IX in 1851.

Saint Michael promised that those who devoutly pray the chaplet when preparing for Mass would have an escort of an angel from each of the nine Choirs when approaching Holy Communion. Also, by praying the chaplet daily, Saint Michael promised his continual assistance and that of the other holy angels throughout life and, after death, deliverance from purgatory for them and their immediate family.
